Low '97 Named to Lead ME Financial Services Dept.

Ryan Low, who graduated from UMF in 1997 with a bachelor's degree in political science, has been appointed by Maine Governor John Baldacci to head the state Department of Administrative and Financial Services. Low assumed the role of point person for a state budget of more than $6 billion in early September after receiving bipartisan support during a legislative confirmation hearing. UMF Community Begins the Year with Public Service

Students, faculty and staff from the University of Maine at Farmington will come together to kick off the academic year with a "Month of Service," UMF's seventh annual celebration of community service. Created to connect campus members with each other while volunteering in the local community, this year's service program has grown from a single Saturday to three Saturdays in September. According to the Morning Sentinel, Theodora J. Kalikow, UMF president, sees the program as an intrinsic part of the UMF experience. "By devoting time to help others, our students gain confidence, enrich their own lives and become contributing members of the community," said Kalikow.

UMF Student Named George J. Mitchell Peace Scholar

University of Maine at Farmington senior Frederick Liebfried (pictured on left, with University of Maine System Chancellor Richard Pattenaude) has recently been named a 2008-2009 George J. Mitchell Peace Scholar. This is the fifth consecutive year that a UMF student has been the recipient of one of only two one-semester Mitchell Peace Scholarships awarded annually by the University of Maine System. According to MaineToday.com, Liebfried, a theater major with a 4.0 grade-point average, will attend University of Cork, in Ireland, for the fall semester.

UMF Names Griswold to Lead Master's Program

University of Maine at Farmington President Kalikow has announced the appointment of Philip A. Griswold as the University's new assistant dean of the UMF College of Education, Health and Rehabilitation. In this newly-created position, Griswold will teach, implement and direct UMF's new graduate program created to develop outstanding educational leaders to meet the needs of western and central Maine. As reported by the Morning Sentinel, Griswold brings more than 25 years of teaching experience to the program. "UMF has a long history of dedication to the teachers of Maine," Griswold said, "This program will continue that commitment by giving them a great opportunity for a quality graduate education."

UMF Trayless Dining Services Reduce Waste and Save Energy

Dining services at University of Maine at Farmington and college campuses across the country are discouraging food waste and decreasing energy use by eliminating the use of trays in their dining halls. Aramark, UMF's dining service provider, is an industry leader in reducing the imprint its schools leave on the environment by taking this innovative approach. Trayless dining, according to a recent USA Today article, reduces food waste by up to 50 percent and saves thousands of dollars in energy savings. "It's a simple idea with profound consequences," said Theo Kalikow, president at the University of Maine at Farmington, which dropped the use of trays last year.

UMF Faculty Member Receives Fulbright to Teach in Nepal

University of Maine at Farmington faculty member Chris Brinegar has been awarded a Fulbright Scholar grant to teach and do research at Kathmandu University in Nepal during the 2008-2009 academic year. While in Nepal, Brinegar, a plant molecular biologist and geneticist, will teach molecular biology, pursue research and advise the Kathmandu University faculty on the development of biotechnology curricula. As reported on MaineToday.com, Brinegar, who teaches environmental science at UMF, is one of approximately 1,100 U.S. faculty and professionals who will travel abroad through the Fulbright Scholar Program.

Maine International Film Festival Shows UMF Student Films

Four University of Maine at Farmington students' films were selected to be screened at the recent Maine International Film Festival in Waterville. Shannon Haines, the festival director, was quoted in a Sun Journal article saying it was the first time so many films from one place were chosen. The festival has the reputation for showing some of the best independent films by Maine, national and international filmmakers.

UMF Student Conducts Undergraduate Research in Africa

University of Maine at Farmington student Abby Pettitt, from Waterville, recently traveled to the African nation of Zambia to perform undergraduate research on drinking water safety and community health. Pettitt, a senior with a double major in biology and psychology and a concentration in pre-med, traveled to the Zambian village of Kaoma with a number of people from UMF, including David Heroux, UMF assistant professor of chemistry and the faculty sponsor of her research project. Pettitt, according to The Morning Sentinel, believes that creating a safe place for Kaoma's residents to get water would be the best way to impact the problem.

UMF Education Program Receives USGBC Grant

The University of Maine at Farmington has been awarded a $20,000 USGBC grant to develop a curriculum that will promote environmentally responsible and sustainable building designs and practices. UMF Celebrates 155th Commencement Ceremony

The University of Maine at Farmington celebrated its 155th Commencement ceremony on May 17 with close to 400 of its 450 graduates marching in the graduation event. UMF President Theodora J. Kalikow and Vice President Allen Berger conferred the degrees, and graduating senior Jessica Longstreet delivered the student address. Sally Goodrich, a humanitarian who dedicated her life to the children of Afghanistan after her son died on September 11, was the keynote speaker and urged the graduates, according to the Maine Sunday Telegram, to get involved in the world. Honorary degrees were bestowed upon Liz Lerman, a leading force in dance in Maine, and Roger Spear, for his 40-year service to the University and the community.

UMF and Sugarloaf Recycle Waste Oil for Biofuel

University of Maine at Farmington Dining Services and Sugarloaf/USA in Carrabassett Valley have both recently joined with Green Bean Bio-Fuel, a Vassalboro-based biodiesel production company, to recycle their waste oil for bio-fuel production. UMF's environmentally responsible effort is made possible by Chris Kinney, director of the University's food services, who leads the way in waste oil recycling for bio-fuel among ARAMARK services nationwide. "We are proud to say that we are recycling 100-percent of our waste cooking oil for bio-fuel," said Kinney. According to the Morning Sentinel, UMF is expected to recycle more than 1,600 gallons of waste oil annually.

Arts Night to Open Annual Symposium

Michael D. Wilson Symposium, an annual two-day, University-wide event dedicated to undergraduate research and creative achievements, was held on the University of Maine at Farmington campus April 15 and 16. This year's artistic and academic exhibition, according to the Sun Journal, brought together more than 400 students, along with their faculty mentors, to share their original performances and artistic and scholarly works with the campus and local community. Featured among the undergraduate research projects were presentations by the 2007-08 Michael D. Wilson Scholars and Fellows, recognized as some of UMF's best students across all disciplines.

UMF Bike Day Offers Geological Tour

University of Maine at Farmington's annual Bike Day offered an interesting new feature this year, a 2.5 mile bike tour of unusual local geological formations led by UMF Assistant Geology Professor Doug Reusch. The tour not only brought to light the many climate changes in the past that can be seen in the region's geological features, but also promoted the idea of using a non-polluting means of transportation to make the journey. UMF Awards Inaugural McDade Scholarship

University of Maine at Farmington sophomore geology major Anthony Greenlaw of Thorndike has been awarded the inaugural Joan McDade Geology Field Study Fund scholarship. As reported in the Morning Sentinel, the fund was established by McDade, a UMF alumna of the class of 1978, whose passion for field study was cut short by lung cancer on March 19, 2008. The award will help support Greenlaw's participation in Geology of Newfoundland, a UMF May term course.

Musician from Senegal Performs at UMF Art Gallery's West African Art Exhibit

Ibrahima Seck, Griot musician and storyteller from Senegal, performed at University of Maine at Farmington before enthusiastic crowds on Thursday, March 28. Seck, a member of a West African hereditary social class of musicians and oral historians, appeared before a large campus and local community audience at The Landing in the Einar Olsen Student Center. A smaller, but just as interested, group of kindergarteners from Farmington's Mallett School, according to an article in the Sun Journal, were captivated by Seck's performance in the UMF Art Gallery's West African Art in Western Maine exhibit.

UMF English Professor Wins Fulbright Scholarship

Eric Brown, an associate professor of English at UMF, recently received a coveted Fulbright Scholarship to spend the 2007-2008 academic year teaching at the University of Bergen in Norway, and was featured in the Sun Journal. Follow Jenna Morency, University of Maine at Farmington 2007 magna cum laude graduate and Fulbright Scholar, as she shares her experiences on Tasmania in her personal blog. FARMINGTON-Meghan Dzyak, a UMF senior from Damariscotta, has received a semester-long curatorial internship at New York City's The Kitchen Center for the Arts as reported by the Portland Press Herald. UMF President Kalikow Joins Global Warming Fight

Theodora J. Kalikow, University of Maine at Farmington president, has recently signed the American College & University Presidents Climate Commitment, according to an article in the Sun Journal, joining 300 of her peers. The Presidents Climate Commitment is the first such effort by any major sector of society to set climate neutrality, not just a reduction, its target. "UMF is committed to leading the way and to modeling responsible stewardship," said Kalikow.

UMF Archeologists Bring History to Light in Vermont

UMF archeologists are in Vermont unearthing a rich cache of Native American artifacts that date back at least 6,000 years, as recently covered by the Associated Press story that appeared in the Boston Globe and numerous other publications. The university has been awarded the contracts to do both the initial excavation and to finish the archeological work. Spearpoints and remnants of fire pits are witness to the long history of the site's use by native populations.

Hughes '07 Graduates Summa Cum Laude With Four Majors

Michael Hughes garnered a bit more applause than most when he stepped to the stage to receive his diploma during the commencement ceremony. The standing ovation was deserved, as he graduated summa cum laude with not one, but four academic majors: in English, mathematics, political science and philosophy/religion. "I didn't want my understanding of the world to be compartmentalized," Hughes told Portland Press Herald columnist Bill Nemitz, who lauded Hughes' achievement in the May 16 issue. "I owe them [UMF professors] a great deal of gratitude. Without their support, I would not have been able to do what I did," he said.

UMF Alumnus Named as an Orlando Magic Asst. Coach

Steve Clifford, former member of the Houston Rockets coaching staff and UMF alumnus of the class of '83 has been named, along with Brendan Malone, Patrick Ewing, and Bob Beyer, as an assistant coach for the Orlando Magic, according to an article on NBA.com. Clifford began his college coaching career in the Northeast and went on to hold assistant coach positions with both the New York Knicks and the Houston Rockets.
